Tokachidake, Hokkaido, Japan
So this was a bit of a conciliation photo since I hiked up this volcano in a choking fog laced with some acrid volcanic fumes to not be able to see anything really into the distance. Of course though after I bailed from the summit the winds opened a pocket of clear sky and views but I was so tired that day I refused to hike back up an hour which was I think the right call since the clear bubble really did not last. So instead I noticed this really neat pattern of layers stretching into the distance beginning with these very strange cones of volanic soil poking out among the snow. I actually would have liked a big more cloud for this shot as I think the little spot of blue sky is a distraction from the overall moody vibe of this composition. And, I am still really torn on a closer shot that cuts the top of the ridge to focus the eye vs a slightly taller shot that lets the ridge rest in the frame but this will for now. Overall I was quite pleased with the patterns at play and the way it all heads off towards another darkened ridge line that's itself shrouded. Also the 70+ year old hikers are definitely goals and have changed how I plan to age as they were still out there steadily climbing volcanoes and so many of them too!
