Gros Morne, Newfoundland
I had hiked to view point overlooking the ocean and I remember being a bit dissatisfied at the composition when I heard loud rustling to my left. So I looked down the trail and locked eyes with a moose. And we both froze. I was flipping through my animal advice in my head like ok ok ok bears, wolves, coyotes, cougars, shit shit shit what do I do with a moose! For a bit I was really hesistant to step away from my camera - classic - but then I carefully stepped down a convenient side path leaving only the tripod behind to clear the path. It clearly decided it did not trust passing too close to me and stepped off the nature highway and crashed through the brush up along the hill side where I was able to swap lenses quick enough to get a few shots. They are so big though. Conceptually I know a moose is big but seeing it looming ahead was amazing and frightening. The only other time I had seen a moose I didn't have my contacts in and had gone down to the lake when camping in the early morning to fill up some water when I looked to my left and a massive looking creature was there. Squinting I could make out presumably what was a moose enjoying a drink watching the sunrise before it ambled off. There I was too tired and confused to have any survival instincts kick in. So this time around it was very shocking!
