Kalsoy, Faroe Islands
There is a very famous shot from close by here of the lighthouse and this rock formation but for a change my self preservation instincts won over my desire for cool photos and given how icy the walkway was and the winds I decided to chill on firm ground. A very intrepid fellow traveller made his way over and hid in a shallow indentation in the earth as powerful winds blasted us but that seemed decidedly not fun. Maybe next time. BUT that said I did while I was chilling in the protection of the lighthouse suddenly notice an incredible beam break from the sky letting through the winter afternoon rays which was very exciting. Not a perfect composition but with only a few seconds to work with I'm happy with how it turned out. It helps that the eastern part of the Faroe Islands tends to be a majestic backdrop no matter which way you point the camera. And there is something nice to try out fresh perspectives from a heavily photographed area too. Even if I'm sure this winter light beam would have made for a neat addition to the classic composition it would probably have been much less interesting so small in the further backed out frame. And honestly the ferry ride over itself was maybe more of a highlight. There was a fresh dusting of snow all over the ridges too which made for such dramatic scenery that I had been waiting for since I arrived!
