Jeju Island, South Korea
I was exploring around the west face of Hallasan on Jeju when I found a little sign and some parking that seemed promising and wandered off into the woods along a trail which led to a cool little temple looking out above the tangled forests out towards the see. But, I couldn't shake the look of the trees and undergrowth on the way. Some of the fascination is as a prairie kid, this amount and density and leafy undergrowth is wild. Like look at how they twist and turn and obscure the vision! In books as a kid they talk about hiding in the woods and even hiding from some kind of flying creature and I always thought well that sure is risky as they'll probably see you in your little prairie grove. But with forests like this I get it, while walking through the forest I really did feel concealed and blinded. Like I was traveling through a tunnel chopped into a world of branches and brambles that were resisting and closing back in. And what also drew my eye was how the greyness of the day suffused the space leaving the undergrowth cast in this unearthly pallor and shading while the trees seemed haunted above it. Unrelated and out of frame and partly what drove me to wander around here was this little knee-high railing. Looked kinda like a mini monorail or something. AND IT WAS. The temple had a little monorail train that would be used to carry up supplies to it! Truly so cool.
