Atacama Desert, Chile
My hands were burning here in a desert, in the sun, and on top of the world. But from the cold, a bitterly cold wind. I was one of those "wait deserts can be cold?" people before the Atacama - obviously on some conceptual level I knew places like parts of Antarctica are deserts but it's very different when you've left your special photography gloves thousands of kilometers away and you're looking at a sandy landscape across flowing icy water while the wind brands frostbite into your skin. Incredibly beautiful and with enough breaks hiding behind the rental car to avoid the loss of my fingers I was able to duck out for different lighting shots as sunset approached. There is no actual sunset photos from this location which I am still sad about because it was a glorious and the sky literally glowed red and pink all the way to the east in a second sunset for the books because I was literally concerned about permanent damage to my hands and my ability to drive back to town. It's a bit hard to see here but the way the water flows through its icy bed is what first drew me off the road here as I think it's fascinating. The lower angle of perspective next to it which allows for cool reflections doesn't quite share the inky blueness of it that I haven't really seen elsewhere that was so cool. I'll see if I took some cell phone pics and share those below at some point too.
